Hair Thinning
Hair thinning has many causes: genetics, hormones, stress, illness, diet, medicines or scalp conditions. Because treatment depends on the cause, the first useful step is a good history and a scalp exam. Changes take months, so it is worth planning for a long course rather than a single visit.
Common causes
- Inherited pattern thinning, which is the most common cause
- Shedding after stress, illness, surgery, childbirth or rapid weight loss
- Low iron, thyroid problems or other medical conditions
- Certain medicines and tight hairstyles or harsh treatments
- Scalp conditions or autoimmune hair loss, which need specific care
How doctors usually approach it
- Find the pattern and cause
- The doctor looks at where hair is thinning and may suggest blood tests. Some causes are reversible once treated.
- Proven medicines first
- Certain topical and oral medicines have good evidence for pattern hair loss. Ask about their side effects and how long to use them.
- Procedures as support
- Scalp injections and platelet-rich plasma are used by some clinics. Evidence varies, and results are uneven.
- Scalp care
- Gentle washing and avoiding tight styles or harsh dyes protect the hair you have.
- Be patient
- Hair grows slowly. Judge a plan over months, not weeks, using photos.
Treatments often discussed
Describing hair thinning to a doctor in English
Give the timeline: when you first noticed it, whether it came suddenly or slowly, and what happened around that time. Say where: "wider part," "receding temples," "thin crown." Say how much hair you shed in the shower. Bring photos from a year or two ago.
List your medicines, supplements, diet changes and recent illnesses. Mention family history on both sides. Tell the doctor if you are pregnant, breastfeeding or planning pregnancy, because some hair medicines are not suitable. Ask whether blood tests are advised before treatment.
Because courses take months, ask what you can start during your stay and what a doctor at home can continue. Request a written plan with product or ingredient names. Ask when to take your next photos, and what level of change would mean the plan is working.
Hair Thinning: common questions
Is hair thinning normal?
Some shedding is normal. Noticeable thinning is common but deserves a check, since some causes can be treated.
Will treatment make my old hair grow back?
It may slow loss or thicken hair for some people. Follicles that have stopped working may not recover.
How long before I see results?
Often several months. Sessions and medicines need patience.
Are hair supplements useful?
They help only if you are low in a nutrient. Ask the doctor before taking high doses.
