Microneedling

Microneedling uses a pen or roller with fine needles to make tiny channels in the skin. People consider it for mild scars, texture and a dull look. It is simpler than radiofrequency versions, but hygiene and aftercare still matter.

How it works

A device with fine needles moves across the skin and creates tiny controlled injuries. The skin responds by healing and may form new collagen over weeks. Depth is adjusted to each area, with shallower settings on thin skin. A serum may be applied afterward, but the doctor should say what it is. Results vary by person.

Who it may suit

  • Mild acne scars
  • Rough texture and enlarged-looking pores
  • Dull or tired-looking skin
  • People who prefer a gentler approach and can do a series

The treatment day

  1. Consultation. The doctor checks for active acne, infection and sensitivities. Mention allergies.
  2. Numbing. Numbing cream is applied and removed before treatment.
  3. Needling. The device is moved over the skin in passes. You may feel scratching and pressure.
  4. Soothing. A calming product is applied. Ask what it is and request aftercare notes in English.

Aftercare

  • Use only gentle products as the doctor allows
  • Avoid sweating and swimming for the period advised
  • Use sunscreen and avoid direct sun
  • Do not touch the face with unwashed hands
  • Report fever, pus or unusual swelling

Things to know first

  • Redness, tightness and small pinpoint marks last a few days
  • Infection, breakouts, bruising and pigment change can occur
  • Not advised on active acne cysts, cold sores or open skin
  • Isotretinoin, pregnancy and bleeding disorders need medical review first
  • Results are modest and vary by person

Talking through microneedling in English

Tell the doctor about allergies, particularly to numbing creams or any serum, and about medicines like isotretinoin or blood thinners. Say if you get cold sores. Mention any recent filler or other procedures.

Ask what is applied to your skin during and after the pen, and whether it is meant for use on broken skin. Ask about the depth planned, the number of sessions and the gap between them. Ask how needle tips are handled for each patient.

Words like needle depth, serum and downtime may come up. Ask the coordinator to explain. Request aftercare in English and confirm how to send photos if your skin reacts.

Microneedling: common questions

Is microneedling safe with any serum?

Not every product is meant to go under the skin. Ask exactly what is used.

How many sessions are typical?

Often several, spaced about a month apart.

Will my face look raw?

It often looks pink, like a mild sunburn, for a day or two.

Can I do it while traveling?

Possible, but plan your sun exposure carefully and ask the doctor first.
