Moles, Tattoos & Skin Lesions

Moles, skin tags, small growths and tattoos are different matters. The most important point is safety: a changing or unusual mole needs a medical examination and may need a lab test, not just cosmetic removal. Tattoo removal is a separate process that takes many sessions.

Common causes

  • Moles form from clusters of pigment cells and are very common
  • Sun exposure and age bring new spots, such as sun spots and some benign growths
  • Skin tags often appear in areas of friction
  • Seborrheic keratoses are benign, rough, waxy growths that increase with age
  • Tattoos are ink placed in the skin that the body does not clear on its own

How doctors usually approach it

Examine before removing
A doctor should look at any mole and decide if it needs testing. Ask whether removed tissue is sent to a lab.
Choose the removal method
Small benign growths may be treated with laser, surgical removal or other methods. Each leaves a different mark.
Plan for healing
Treated spots often form scabs and a pink mark that fades over weeks to months. Sun care helps reduce dark marks.
Tattoo removal series
Lasers break ink into smaller pieces over many sessions, weeks apart. Some colors and inks fade less.
Follow-up
Ask when to return, and what changes should make you contact a doctor.

Describing moles and tattoos to a doctor in English

For a mole, say how long it has been there and whether it has changed in size, color, shape, or started to bleed or itch. Bring older photos if you have them. These facts matter more than appearance alone. Ask directly: "Does this need testing, and will the removed tissue be examined?"

For a tattoo, say how old it is, what colors it has, where on the body it sits, and whether it was done professionally. Ask how many sessions are expected, how far apart, and what marks may remain. Be ready for an honest answer that complete removal is not always possible.

Ask for the plan for each lesion in writing and for any lab results to be sent to you. Mention a history of keloids, blood thinners, pregnancy and allergies to anesthetic. Plan for healing time in the first weeks after you fly home.

Moles, Tattoos & Skin Lesions: common questions

Can a mole be removed for cosmetic reasons?

Often yes, but a doctor should examine it first. Suspicious moles need a proper medical assessment.

Will removal leave a scar?

Some mark may remain. It depends on the size, site and method. Ask the doctor what to expect.

How many sessions does tattoo removal take?

Often many, and sometimes ink does not fully clear. It depends on the ink, depth and skin.

Is tattoo removal painful?

It can feel like snapping and heat. Numbing cream and cooling may help.
