PicoSure
PicoSure is a 755 nm picosecond laser from Cynosure. Learn what to ask in English about pigment, tattoos, and spot treatment.
How it works
PicoSure is a picosecond laser made by Cynosure, with a wavelength of 755 nm. A picosecond is a trillionth of a second, so each pulse is extremely short. The short pulse is meant to break pigment into very small pieces through a light-driven shock effect rather than mostly through heat. The body then clears the fragments over time. It is used for some pigment spots and tattoo colors. Results vary by pigment type, skin type, and depth.
Good to know
- A 755 nm wavelength responds well to some dark pigments but not all tattoo colors.
- Handpieces differ, with some used for whole-face tone and others for single spots.
- Snapping or stinging feelings are common.
- Redness, swelling, scabs, or color change in the skin can follow.
Asking about PicoSure in English
Many clinics say "pico laser" for different machines. If you want this one, ask the coordinator to confirm "PicoSure by Cynosure" and which handpiece is planned. Ask for it in writing, along with the number of visits expected.
Ask the doctor to explain the spot size and the energy in simple terms, and what darker skin or recent sun exposure might change. A useful question is, "What will my spot look like on day three and day ten?" Tell them about any tan, any medicines, and any history of dark marks after skin injury.

What is a picosecond laser?
It is a laser with extremely short pulses. The short time is meant to shatter pigment into very small pieces.

Do I need sun protection?
Yes, usually. Ask for written sun-care steps and follow them closely.
