Under-Eye Hollows & Dark Circles

Dark circles are not one thing. For some people the cause is pigment, for others blood vessels showing through thin skin, and for others a hollow that casts a shadow. Treatments differ for each, and a wrong match can disappoint. The skin here is delicate, so careful assessment matters.

Common causes

  • Natural skin pigment that is deeper around the eyes
  • Thin skin that shows blood vessels as a blue or purple tone
  • A tear trough hollow that creates shadow, often from genetics or age
  • Allergies, rubbing and lack of sleep, which can worsen the look
  • Fluid retention or puffiness that changes the shape of the lower lid

How doctors usually approach it

Identify the cause
A doctor may stretch the skin or change the light angle to see if the dark look is pigment, vessels or a shadow.
Reduce triggers
Treat allergies, avoid rubbing, protect the area from sun and sleep enough.
Skin-quality treatments
Some injections or gas-based treatments aim to improve thin, dull skin. Evidence is limited and results are modest.
Filler for hollows
Hyaluronic acid filler can soften a hollow, but the area is delicate, and swelling or lumps can occur. Choose the practitioner with care.
Realistic expectations
Dark circles often improve rather than disappear. Ask the doctor what they expect for your type.

Describing under-eye circles to a doctor in English

Tell the doctor when the circles are worst: in the morning, when tired, or all the time. Say what color they look and whether they appear as a shadow or as a color change. Take photos in front of a window and with the light from above. Use words such as "hollow," "puffy," "blue-purple" and "brown."

Mention allergies, eye conditions, and any past filler or eye surgery. Ask clearly what the cause is judged to be, and which treatment would address that cause. The right answer for a hollow is not the right answer for pigment.

Because the under-eye area is delicate, ask about risks and what the plan is if lumps or swelling occur. Ask how long bruising may last, and whether this fits before your flight and before photos or events. Request written aftercare and the product name.

Under-Eye Hollows & Dark Circles: common questions

Can dark circles be removed?

They can often be improved. Complete removal is uncommon, and the cause decides what works.

Is under-eye filler risky?

The area is delicate. Swelling, lumps, bluish tone and rarely serious vascular problems are possible. Experience of the practitioner matters.

Would sleep fix my dark circles?

It may help if tiredness worsens them, but structure and pigment will remain.

Can I wear makeup after treatment?

Ask the clinic. Bruising may be covered once the skin has settled.
